Wanrong Cheng: Architecture Design I
Project 01: Word Project
This project was based off of a word given to you, determined by your personality (sort of). You were to create an artwork that incorporated you word using only triangles, circles, and parts thereof. The word bestowed upon me was Paradoxical: "seemingly absurd or self-contradictory." My idea for the concept was to have 2 sides, one would be more playful sort of, while the other more sharply contrasted and abrupt. (Kind of similar to the Yin Yang) The two sides would be comprised mainly of its original element, but with a little bit of the opposing side as well.
This word will be used throughout the future projects. Images I stared at for reference: |
Project 02: Tiny HouseThe location I decided on for this project is Lake Tahoe, California because it's aesthetically pleasing. This area has an average of 142 inches of snow per year and a variety of trees, including one I stupidly decided to place beside where I planned to deposit my structure, causing me much unnecessary pain and suffering. As you can see from the image, this area contains a ton of trees, not very wide, but quite tall. Another notable characteristic was the very nice lake to which I selfishly hoard the view and kept it mostly to only the bedroom and the work space.

My idea was for the structure to stand out against it's surroundings, yet still embrace it (my attempt at paradoxical). I was hoping to make the interior spaces connected, (so I can go in circles to avoid people if they visit) while also somehow keeping them separated.
I wanted a circular layout for my house so there would be two exits no matter where I was The house is has a circular layout so there’s two exits no matter where you are, but I still wanted to make sure the separation between certain rooms was obvious. These are the tiny houses I stole ideas from. |
Drawings and ModelThis slideshow includes my site analysis, mini floor plan layout, and my old front and west elevation.
I had to relocate my garage because that one aggravating tree just barely scraped my garage. I was unable to chop it down due to the Lorax appearing at my door with an axe. |

During the photography process, I failed to realize you were supposed to take more than one picture, so as a resourceful child, I exploited the instructor’s cellular device, allowing me to successfully acquire the necessary cargo. I also changed quite a few things, so this model is a bit outdated and isn't an accurate representation of my new floor plan.
|
Final Floor Plan | Roof Plan | ElevationsA significant change I made was changing all the doors to sliding glass doors. During our second jury presentation, I was given the suggestion to incorporate sliding pocket doors on either side of the bedroom to emphasize the privacy and the separation of the rooms. (It's not visible on this floor plan though) I also relocated my garage so when you arrive, you would park your car, then continue onwards into the house. My elevations contain a plethora of large open windows in an effort to optimize the view surrounding the structure.
